Discovery’s Approach to Teacher Development Time (TDT)
At Discovery Trust, we believe that great teaching starts with giving teachers the time and space to grow. Teacher Development Time (TDT) is our commitment to ensuring every teacher has dedicated, protected time each week to focus on their professional learning—on top of their regular PPA time.
What is TDT?
TDT is scheduled time, provided at the discretion of each school’s leadership, and covered by trained staff such as cover supervisors. This time is designed exclusively for teacher development and can be used for:
- Developing self-reflective practice – using technology to analyse focus areas of pedagogy
- Professional Conversations – Engage with mentors and coaches to reflect and refine practice.
- Research and CPD – Explore evidence-based strategies and attend Early Career Framework (ECF) and NPQ sessions.
- Subject Leadership – Build expertise and confidence in leading curriculum areas.
- Virtual Support – Access weekly trust-wide virtual lessons to free up time for development.
